José Ezequiel Soto Sánchez has a PhD in Mathematics, emphasis in Computer Graphics, by the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA), working at the Visgraf lab. MsC in Production Engineering, emphasis on Management and Innovation, by the Alberto Luiz Coimbra Institute of Postgraduate Studies in Engineering of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (COPPE / UFRJ). BS in Applied Mathematics with honors by the Mexico Autonomous Institute of Technology (ITAM). Worked as posdoctoral research fellow in the project Computational Intelligence Applied to the Energy Sector and the Attention of Human Health, at the Instituto Tecgraf of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio).

Current research on tilings and tesselations, geometric combinatorics, and geometric patterns and representations. His thesis “On Periodic Tilings with Regular Polygons” was awarded Best PhD Thesis in the 34th Conference on Graphics, Patterns and Images (SIBGRAPI 2021) and Committee Highlight of the Odelar Leite Linhares Awards of the Brazilian Society of Applied and Computational Mathematics (SBMAC). After graduating and before his postgraduate studies, he worked for around 7 years with interdisciplinary research teams and civil society organizations on the development of quantitative research methodologies applied to social sciences and environmental and health matters. He has a constant interest on the development of mathematics education and communication tools.
